Parker Tyler (1904-1974) was a noted American film critic, and this text is regarded as his most significant work. Devoted to homosexuality in films, it aims to look beyond the obvious and to observe the psychology of sex roles, at the same time recognising film as the realm of contemporary mythology. Tyler was once described as one of the most consistently interesting and provocative writers on film that America has produced, "well-informed and free of cant".

Parker Tyler is a very influential--if somewhat overlooked--film critic and theorist. Also a queer theorist, though that term didn't exist as such when he was inventing the discipline, of which this book is a foundational example. He has a well developed eye for evaluating and categorizing sex and gender representation in film, and the breadth of film examples this work encompasses is phenomenal. Along with his volume "Underground Film," this work was a cornerstone of my introduction to experimental cinema back in the 70s. This work, especially, is almost an index of lesbian, gay and gender-queer film artists advancing (and subverting) the art of film and the theme and motif of sex in film. Eye-opening and essential (but not essentialist) reading.
