A book everyone should read!

This book is one of the most helpful books that I have found. Bowels and Gintis combine a Marxist reading with a well-researched history of the US educational system. This book is a great read for anybody looking for either a concise critique of capitalism or a thorough history of public education. They provide critiques of both mainstream and alternative schooling practices, and call attention to the linkages between the educational and economic systems. In an investigation of the roots of our current educational practices, I think it is too easy to overlook the ideologies needed and fostered by our corporate capitalist economy and their direct connections to what happens in our schools. Bowels and Gintis do a great job filling in these cracks. I especially appreciate how they are extremely honest about their biases and admit when their research might have holes in it. It is refreshing to not feel manipulated. It is also an easy book to read, especially compared to a lot of academic texts out there. It was written during the seventies, so some of the socialist conversations a are bit out of date, but in general, I think their critiques are fully relevant today.
