Brown cloth with pictorial is on beveled boards with rubbed gilt lettering and is showing rubbing, lightly bumped with front bottom corner thru to board, fraying head & foot of backstrip with small tears, hinges starting, decorative end papers, contents page and illustration listing in back, contents lightly browning, some very light scattered foxing, pretty clean and pretty tight. Good.

The author refers, she said to those summer tramps with "diamond ear-rings, and cuff-buttons, and Saratoga trunks, and big accounts at their bankers". Comic appraoch of the era, written in regional dialect and set in Saratoga Springs, NY, a late 19th century resort area with hotels, lake beaches, and horse racing. Written based on Marietta Holley's own observations. For her earlier work, "Samantha at the Centennial", she used her imagination and writings of others who had attended that event.
