I had the pleasure of studying under Professor Burns at Williams College not long after he completed the second of this two-volume masterpiece. I have the second, inscribed, and longed for the first to round out a personal collection. I'm thrilled to say that this book not only holds up well after 45 years; in my view, it still ranks as the seminal treatise on this period. The writing is lively and fresh; the sourcing excellent. I note that current books on fdr and this period heavily rely on Burns' duet for their own source notes. The only omission of any consequence is not Burns' fault (affair with Lucy Rutherford), and one can read plenty elsewhere about that lesser event of fdr's leadership.. No serious follower of fdr and his times should be without this outstanding book.
