River of Swans is the sequel to Pale Star, and continues her story and her desire to return to the People on the Plains. Lt. Du Pres, stationed at Ft. Mishi-ghan, is sent on a mission by his commander; a secret mission, to find a new passage to the Pacific Ocean. The commander thinks that the passage to the Pacific is not Northwest, but Southwest. The party is made up of Lt Du Pres, Sergeant Cartier, a scout by the name of Brule, and his wife, Pale Star. Their journey is over water, in two canoes. They meet with disaster in a flooded river. Brule and Cartier are missing and presumed drowned when a large piece of a tree destroys both Brule's and Pale Star's canoes. Now Pale Star is free to try to return to her people, the Elk-Dog band of the People. They are on the river of Swans which is close to home, but without transportation. This is the story of her determination to return home.
