Each chapter begins and ends with a woodcut designed by Wilfred Jones, who also created the frontispieces: Vol.1, The Agricultural Era, shows a farmer plowing with oxen; and Volume 2, The Industrial Era, shows mills and smokestacks. Corners of these books are bumped and the binding is rubbed.
