Although this story is written for middle school children, it has wide appeal for one and all. This is because Prince Jen's quest, initiated by his father, has merit and, put into action, excitement; lessons to be learned; loss; gain; and the hero's transforming into someone above that at which he started.
Each chapter ends with the author's note of what to expect in the following chapter. This may become annoying to some. As well, each chapter begins titled with two or three points to look for within the chapter at hand. Useful, this, for those who must know what to expect is to happen next.
No more caveats: lots to look forward to. Lloyd Alexander is an award-winning young people's author(Caldecott). His prose is graceful, with a few words sprinkled here and there which may challenge the young reader. His message is integrated into the story so that with the adventure, a dose of edification is served up, too.
