Fine in Very Good+ jacket. 359 pages plus an eight page Index, hardcover in an attractive/durable full-cloth binding. "In the Federal Convention at Philadelphia nearly 180 years ago two men in their twenties, Pinckney and Hamilton, looked into the future and debated what should be the purpose of our nation...Now the distinguished author (Hans J. Morgenthau) has written a forthright, thought-provoking, and immensely readable book on this same subject. Dr. Morgenthau evolves his definition of the national purpose from a brilliant analysis of our history...He shows how economic transformations engendered the first crisis of the national purpose (1890-1940) and how that crisis blended into the second, predominantly political, one in whose midst we find ourselves today...Thus faced with new, and in some instances subtle, power combinations at home, as well as naked power abroad, the nation is groping for goals, striving to get into focus America's image of itself. Will it rejuvenate itself once again in the light of its purpose-equality in freedom, preserved at home and expanded and emulated abroad? Realist though he is, Dr. Morgenthau refuses to believe that the nation no longer discerns a purpose beyond a sterile maintenance of its political and material status quo; while America may 'not know this...America has become the Rome and the Athens of the West. '" Excellent copy: spine square, pages faintly toned else the book is entirely as new with NO markings throughout. The dj has minor rubbing, head of spine has one small and one tiny chip/heel is lightly bumped with a couple TINY tears/one small scrape near center, back has one short tear and a little creasing at upper and lower edges with one small chip at lower.
