Punga the Goddess of Ugly

by Deborah Nourse Lattimore

About this title: A picture-book version of a Maori folktale. Two sisters, Maraweia and Kiri, try hard to learn the ceremonial haka dance which involves dancing backwards while stick out one's tongue. However Maraweia won't take the dance seriously and keeps making silly faces. This behavior angers Punga, the goddess of all things ugly, who turns Maraweia into a wooden lodgepole. Can Kiri perform the haka dance well enough to convince Punga to free Maraweia? Watercolor and colored pencil illustrations accompany the text.
