black-&-white illustrations. Thick 12mo, pp. x, 405. Bound in full grained leather, ruled in gilt, with the embossed crest of the Cunard Steam Ship Company to front and rear boards. [John] Cunningham Geikie was a Scottish clergyman, born in Edinburgh in 1826. After completing his education at the University of Edinburgh, he travelled with his father to Canada where, in 1862, he became a pastor in Toronto. He returned to England, and eventually took holy orders in the Church of England (1876). He wrote a number of books, primarily dealing with religious or historical topics. The author notes that "It was written after a lengthened stay in Canada, and may be thoroughly relied upon either by intending emigrants, or by others who wish to know about Bush Life in the Dominion." The first edition was published by Routledge (London) in 1864 under the title "George Stanley; or, Life in the Woods". Strahan first published it in 1873 under the title "Life in the Woods. A true story of the Canadian bush". Our copy is the second Strahan printing, but the first under the title shown. It was again re-published, using this title, in 1881, by S. W. Partridge & Co. See Watters 870. The Cunard crest suggests this copy may have crossed the Atlantic many times as part of the on-board library of one of its steamships. The spine is a bit wrinkled, and there is noticeable wear and soiling to the boards. The hinges and joints are tight. Occasional foxing to contents. A good copy, in a sturdy binding.
