A Jewel from Historian Barbara Tuchman

A superbly researched and superbly written survey of the several decades leading up to World War I. A wonderful primer on the state of much of the world's mentality in a time of worldwide uproar--the rise of Socialism, Communism, the Anarchist Movement, and numerous other societal upheavals. The perfect book to read to set the stage for understanding WW I. Published in the 1960s and still brilliant today.

Excellent!

This is an excellent presentation of events in Europe and US before World War I. The chapters about the anarcharists and the US take over of the Phillipines were particularly of interest to me, Many of the names will be familiar to anyone with basic knowledge of history, but the scope of their involvement may be new. Tuchman does a great job of presenting history in an unfictionalized but very readable form.
