Hard to put down

by Margie on Apr 3, 2007

I have read this book for the second time recently and have enjoyed it even more than I did the first time. Having a good imagination, I can invision Caroline, both in appearance and temperment. Sometimes I want to shake her for her unreasoning blindness, which persists inspite of the love of her husband, Tom. The characters are well-outlined and as such are either loved or disliked. For instance, it is very easy to dislike the cold Timothy; and her father, John, is easy to hate for misshaping Caroline's view of life, people, and money, ultimately ruining her life until it is almost too late. Descriptions of dress of the period, home furnishings, locations, and transportation are well done and being someone who is fascinated with period 1850 to the 1920s, I am in my element. Would recommend to anyone interested in a good book dealing with this time period and the thinking at the time. Overall, I would give the book 5 stars but I may be prejudiced.
