Principles of Yacht Design has now established itself as the standard book on the subject for practising designers, naval architecture students, discerning boat owners and the boatbuilding industry as a whole. Now revised and expanded for the third edition it examines every aspect of the process of yacht and powerboat design. The authors have used a newly designed 40 foot performance cruiser to demonstrate the practical application of yacht design theory. Beginning with the yacht's specifications, the authors examine vital topics and conclude with practical matters such as the layout of the cockpit, deck and cabin, and provide a complete weight calculation for the boat. This is one of the books that I really enjoyed reading. It includes concise information with enough equations to evaluate a design but without the complexities of deriving the equations. It includes information that would shorten the guess work of sail shape, for example, while sailing. It does not make you an expert in designing a boat, but it helps definitely in understanding a boat design and what to expect from it. It is helpful in making a decision while purchasing a boat by getting a good idea about its expected performance. I recommend it to boat designers and boaters alike since it is helpul but not difficult to read and understand.
