The story is told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them all they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil. This tale of one family's tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction, over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa, is set against one of history's most dramatic political parables. "The Poisonwood Bible" dances between the darkly comic human failings and inspiring poetic justices of our times. In a compelling exploration of religion, conscience, imperialist arrogance, and the many paths to redemption, Barbara Kingsolver has written a novel of overwhelming power and passion.Hide synopsis

I will likely read it again--which is rare for me-- but I remember the beauty of its prose and the power of the story and know that this is one book well worth reading and re-reading to capture its richness ...

I did not know some of the political happenings in the Congo at the time this book was set in. But I love Barbara Kingsolver's way of writing and it was a satisfying story. It gave a personal touch to an African way of life that I would have no knowledge of if I had not read it.
