Very Good. Book The Pickering edition of the poems of John Herman Merivale. John Herman Merivale (5 August 1779, Exeter 25 April 1844, Bedford Square) was an English barrister and man of letters. An edition of his Poems, Original and Translated, appeared in 1838, London, 2 vols., which includes also a continuation of Beattie's Minstrel, some translations from Dante, and other miscellanea. Complete in two volumes. Condition: In half-calf bindings. Externally, sound, though with some rubbing and some marks. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, though with some occasional instances of foxing. Overall: GOOD.
Very Good. Book A uniformly bound collection of these poetical anthologies compiled and edited by English barrister and man of letters, John Herman Merivale. New and corrected edition with some additional pieces. William Pickering editions. Merivale was a friend of Lord Byron, who praised his translations from the Greek and his Orlando in Roncesvalles, which is included within this set. He was a frequent contributor to the Quarterly Review and other reviews and periodicals. Poems Original and Translatedis complete in two volumes, withThe Minor Poems of Schiller being complete within itself. Condition: Rebound in half calf bindings with cloth covered boards, and gilt detailing to the spines. Externally, all volumes are rubbed, with instances of damp staining to the boards. All spine labels are absent, and all hinges are strained. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound and bright, although with some scattered spotting to the first and last leaves. Blind stamp to the verso of the front free endpaper of all volumes, and neat ink signature to the endpaper of volume one. Overall: GOOD.

Slightest of edgewear. 19th century bookplate on each front pastedown of one G. Mead Tooker, who also signs an inner flyleaf in each volume. Handsome and tight first edition.
