Charles Evans Hughes was Governor of New York from 1907 to 1910, unsuccessful Republican candidate for President in 1916, and served as Secretary of State from 1921-1925 under Harding and Coolidge. He was named to the U.S. Supreme Court by President Taft in 1910 (resigning in 1916 in order to run for President). He returned to the Supreme Court when Herbert Hoover appointed him Chief Justice in 1930, a position he held until 1941.
