Tight, clean copy. Light edgewear to wraps. A landmark work in the history of art, arguably the best single volume available on modern sculpture. Krauss's dissertation had been based on the postwar American sculptor David Smith. For this work, she expanded her studies to rewrite the history of modern sculpture (since Rodin), with a special focus on Picasso's invention of assemblage, Brancusi's emphasis on the pedestal, Duchamp's readymades, Constructivist and Surrealist works. The later chapters, influenced by Structuralist and post-Structuralist philosophies, concern the "expanded field" presented by Minimalism, Post-Minimalism, and Earthworks. (In typical Krauss fashion, there are a few corpses by the end of the book, including a rival critic Jack Burnham, whose book Beyond Modern Sculpture is quickly dispensed with. )
