Of all the books that I have read about the Civil War (and I have read many), this is the only one that presents an analytic biography of General MClennan, prior to his assuming command of the Union Army, which makes clear the reasons for (indeed, the inevitability of) his command decision failures at the critical moments in his military career as commander of the Union army.
