The Outsiders by S E Hinton is a ground-breaking, timeless story by a brilliant writer. '...the hand at the back of my neck was strong. I'm drowning, I thought ...' The Socs' idea of having a good time is beating up Greasers like Ponyboy. Ponyboy knows what to expect and knows he can count on his brothers and friends - until the night someone takes things too far. The original teenage rebel story. The 40th anniversary edition. S. E. Hinton was only seventeen when The Outsiders was first published in the USA. She grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where the story takes place, and lived in a borderline neighbourhood mixing with both greasers and socs. This experience helped her to understand the boys about whom she writes. The Outsiders was made into a major film, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. S.E. Hinton went on to write several novels for teenagers including: Tex, Rumble Fish and That Was Then, This Is Now. Married with one son, S.E. Hinton was the first recipient of the American Library Association's YASD/SLJ Award for her oustanding contribution to Young Adult Literature.
School summer reading, therefore my son does not enjoy reading it...

I first read "The Outsiders" about 50 years ago. It remains a great book, timeless in its depiction of young people struggling to grow to maturity and understanding while a virtual whirlwind of competing societal pressures rages around them. It is a classic that I would recommend to anyone - young and old.

a great book which my favorite movie was based on!
I LOVE this movie, and since it is quite similar to the book, the book is very enjoyable as well! This is a book all about the rich kids (soc's) and the kids from the wrong side of the tracks (greasers)...how they relate to each other, how they are alike and different in more ways then they'd imagine and how their lives are more intertwined with each other's than they realized. Fun, quick , light read!
Publishers Weekly, 2007-08-27 S.E. Hinton's gritty story returns in the hardcover The Outsiders: 40th Anniversary Edition, published with the original cover art. Hinton's first novel, written at the age of 16, has since introduced generations of readers to Ponyboy, a so-called Greaser from the wrong side of the tracks, and the fierce rivalry between the Greasers and the Socs (short for Socials). With more than 13 million copies sold to date, the relevance of this modern classic has not waned. (Viking, $17.99 192p ages 12-up ISBN 9780-670-06251-5; Sept.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC.
