Great Read

by BethT on Nov 1, 2007

This is a fascinating insight into post Civil War Spain and, of course, El Cordobes. It left me wanting to know how his life has been since 1968. Collins and Lapierre treat their subject with warmth and grace which is refreshing in an era where biographers seem to only want to air dirty laundry. They were honest, but not voyeuristic. I wish they would write an update. The book was so good, it left me wanting to know more.

Tragic Art!

by EddieWannabee on Apr 4, 2007

This is a great book worth its weight in gold. It would certainly merit 4.5 Stars but like most websites the half mark does not exist. First of all I am an avid fan of Dominique Lapierre's body of work. After reading the "City of Joy" I realized how important this writer is to me. In "Or I'll dress you in mourning" he collaborates with Larry Collins and the book just goes along that is hard to tell where one author begins or the other one ends. This is the story of Manuel Benitez "El Cordobes" a fearless, very poor bullfighter who committed himself to become the best and the richest. His road to fame came with a heavy price and the period in history in which he was pursuing his monumental goal to become the best "Matador" also impacts heavily in this bullfighter's history. There are many who dislike the fact that bulls are killed in the arena in which they are fought. I would simphatize but I know better. These bulls are extremely aggresive and their whole purpose is to be fought in the "Fiesta Brava". One thing for sure: This is a tragic act, some of the greatest bullfighters have lost their lifes doing this kind of a job. From Joselito (who some insist is the best that ever was) to Manuel Rodriguez Sanchez "El Manolete" and many more through the history of bullfghters who lost their lifes while fighting a bull. These animals, specially the ones from the best breeders, are powerful beasts. They can turn on a dime and charge with such ferocity that the risk of getting gored is forever present. El Cordobes was not a classical "Torero" but he distinguished himself by his fearlessness in the ring. I had the opportunity to see him once in Lima, Peru in an afternoon where he had the spectators screaming for him to stop taking chances. He spun this huge bull around him 10 times, each closer and closer till animal and man where basically one. This book gives the reader the true story of this noble art and depicts the story of this one man. He told his sister hours before his most important "corrida" that he would buy her a house "Or I'll dress you in mourning". El Cordobes became so famous and luckily for him retired in relatively good health but while he travelled through spain looking for opportunities he went through the kind of hell that only the very tough overcomes. A great read, 4.5 stars for Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre's "Or I'll dress you in mourning".
