Writing in the 1950s, Betty MacDonald, sophisticated and urbane, captivated readers with her observations about raising a family on an island in Puget Sound. As usual, humorist MacDonald is her own favorite target. She manages to get herself into scrapes with washing machines set adrift in rowboats, used cars, and a $25 Turkey Squasher. And then there's the scariest aspect of island life -- teenaged children.Hide synopsis

I originally read Onions in the Stew when I was in college. MacDonald's ability to draw the reader into her world is delightful. The humor is often at the expense of turmoil and strife but it's that kind of tenacity that builds character. And Betty MacDonald has plenty to keep us all laughing and worrying and wondering as we navigate the choppy waters of her life on Vashon Island.
Buy it and read it - you'll get a kick out of it for sure.
