The Real Deadwood

by b29b on Nov 19, 2007

Miss Bennett's book is a vivid description of life in Deadwood in the 1880's. Personally aquainted with many famous Deadwood figures, (Calamity Jane, Seth Bullock, etc.) the author lets us see them as they really were. As a young girl, Miss Bennett was not directly involved with the sort of intrique, vice and violence that make up Deadwood's reputation, but she did witness her share of gunplay and brawling. A respectable girl, she, nonetheless, interacted with whores and gamblers as well as lawmen and clergy. This book is an honest description of daily life in the infamous Deadwood. What comes through, however, is a surprising sense of community and civic pride in a place known, quite rightly, as "wild "and "lawless."
