Important Work Needs Better Binding

by Lifes on Dec 2, 2008

Nonfiction Book Proposals Anybody Can Write: How to Get a Contract and Adva... by Elizabeth Lyon It's a shame that the publisher/author chose to put such important information into such poor binding. Within a day of normal use, the binding glue failed and in ones, twos, and threes, pages started separating from the book! Every page turn became semi- traumatic--would this gentle movement make another page fall out, too? Within a week, the total loose pages could fill a whole chapter or two. Ms. Lyon lists a lot of great info about writing a proposal (before beginning your book!) and shows examples of the process. This is the kind of direction new authors need, especially people who learn by seeing and then by doing. The author gives frequent tips to help authors feel more confident in the proposal process. The guidance seems reliable and productive for authors seeking the prize: to write a good proposal and a good book, and then to interest a publisher. The binding issues, however, detract from the book's message. I had to resort to holding the book together with rubber bands (as if it was a very old book), making it tedious to use the work as a reference guide. Even with diligent care, I'm concerned one of the loose pages will get lost. (The resale value, also, is obviously nil.) Had the author and publisher chosen better binding, possibly as hardcover, I'd give the work 5 stars. But with the book's propensity to fall apart so quickly, I vote 1 star for presentation. I vote 4 stars for content, only because the book gives little attention to some genres; otherwise, a helpful text. With both votes, I rate the work overall as a 2 star quality. It's just a shame the poor binding so significantly degrades the message. Lifes
