One of the largest and most diverse language groups in the world, the nations and tribes which are related under the title "Algonquin" once occupied most of the northeastern United States, from the Mississippi River to the Atlantic Ocean, and great portions of southern Canada. Their influence on the culture and history of North America has been immense. Here we share this world and experience with the author a sweat lodge, vision quest, ceremonial dances and the wise teachings of Algonquin elders. Pritchard also points out the remarkable parallels between Algonquin beliefs and those of better-known religions, Taoism, Buddhism, Judaism, and Christianity.Hide synopsis

No Word for Time has garnered superlatives from reviewers and influential Native American figures, who have declared it one of the finest books on Native American spirituality ever written. Evan Pritchard, a descendent of the Micmac people (part of the Algonquin nations), aimed to learn more about his own native traditions through studying the language of the Algonquin, the key to their worldview: "They don't write in metaphor, they speak it; they don't recite poetry, they live it." The tribes collectively named "Algonquin" once occupied large stretches of North America, and their influence on our culture is vast. This edition includes a new index and afterword; a pronunciation key to the Algonquin language; a comprehensive map of the Algonquin world; a list of the major Algonquin nations and what they call themselves; and the Seven Points of Respect for Native American Ceremonies. (Key Words: Native Americans, Spirituality, Algonquin Mythology, Algonquin Philosophy ).

After reading this book I understand the mind-spirit-body connection in a way that even Jung did not provide. The DOING of life; the VIVIDNESS of language that is not bound to NOUNS but to movement and color and sound and action -- this is only part of what this small volume has to offer: and it is wonderful to read and absorb.
