Not without minor flaws, but remains close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 295pp. First published by Chatto & Windus in 1984 and in paperback by Penguin in 1986; this is a later printing thereof. Trade Paperback. Carter's novel is a rollicking three ring circus in which she juggles the Enlightenment, Romantacism, Modernism, Postmodernism, Feminism, Communism, all while making innumerable literary and cultural references. How postmodern. She works with some traditional narratives but adds her own reading of them. The novel works through a series of odd stories within the story that take place in locations clearly meant to represent historical epochs: Ma Nelson's House of Rational Desires, Madame Schreck's Museum of Women Monsters, Christian Rosencreutz's Gothic Mansion, Colonel Keary's Grand Circus, Buffo the Great's Clown Alley, The Grand Duchess's Panopitc Penitentiary for Husband Killers, and finally the whole crew winds up at a music conseravtory in the middle of Siberia. Through her journeys, the birdwoman protagonist, Fevvers, reinvents and redefines herself, constantly avoiding absolute definition, all the while exposing the problematic dialectics of each era's thinking. And, believe it or not, the whole novel is not overly pedantic, it's incredibly entertaining. I definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys a bit of postmodern reading.
