Their proponents rejected both formalist criticism and earlier attempts to read literature in its historical context and defined new ways of thinking about literature in relation to history. This study explains the development of these theories and demonstrates both their uses and weaknesses as critical practices. The potential future direction for thetheories is explored and the debates about their validity in literary studies are discussed. The book is for undergraduate students of English Literature; and those on courses in literary theory/cultural studies/Renaissance, 18th-century and Victorian literature/the novel.Read Less

The subject of my English literature Ph.D. dissertation is related to New Historicism. I wish I could have come across Brannigan's book earlier. No text like this was able to answer my questions so well. While reading the book, you feel you can easily grasp all those difficult New Historicist, Cultural Materialist, and more importantly, Foucauldian arguments. Unlike what you may find in other volumes on New Historicism (e.g. Pieters's Moments of Negotiation), the author here proves very successful.
