Dr. Kerr's brilliant presentation of the multiple and complex--individual, social, and cultural--passions crashing against each other in the world of ideas about the mind, which led to the co-occurence of creativity and destructivity in the emergence of psychoanalysis---is breathtaking. It is unspeakably miraculous that a method of treatment which has infinite healing capabilities, could have survived the destructive tempests which competed with the resilient creativity of the founders. No movie can do justice to the non-visual depth and scope of the book. A movie which extracts, not to mention distorts, one fragment of the book's panorama, does a disservice to the parent book.
