I am a working artist, and heard a lecture based on this book from one of my teachers. Needless to say, it is a lofty and in-depth study of art, and the historical reasoning behind representation or scheme in art. Apparently, it is a classic and probably should be read by any serious artist. There are good picture reproductions, a few in color, but mostly b&w. My copy is reprinted 1992.
