But the man himself remained a mystery, a backstage presence who served these authors not only as editor but as critic, career manager, moneylender, psychoanalyst, confessor and friend. This outstanding biography, a winner of the National Book Award, is the first to explore the fascinating life of this editor extraordinaire in both professional and personal domains. It tells not only of Perkins' stormy marriage and secret twenty-five-year romance with Elizabeth Lemmon, but also of his intensely intimate relationships with the leading literary lights of the twentieth century.Hide synopsis

A. Scott Berg's excellent biography will make you wish you had known Max Perkins,. And it will give you insight into how, an outstanding editor worked with his authors, authors you'll want to get back to : Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Wolfe, Rawlings, etc.
It's a daunting task to write a readable biography. It's even more of a Herculean job to write one of someone behind-the-scenes in a desk job. But that's what Scott Berg has done in his bio of Max Perkins, the great literary editor. Highly readable (as all Berg's work is), serving up internal drama but not over-doing it, providing insights into Perkins' world and the great writers he shepherded, especially F. Scott Fitzgerald.
