This FINE condition hardback would have been rated NEW, but for slight wrinkling at the head/heel. Text block as NEW and appears to be UNUSED-has new book look & feel. Dust jacket NOT price clipped. Photograph is SPECIFIC to this listing. Hardback, printed cover on cloth, dust jacket not price clipped, small tears closed w/acid-free tape. Very few copies are available that are nearly NEW and marked FIRST EDITION. If the dust jacket were nearly NEW, the price would be considerably higher. So, as shown in the photograph, this is a fantastic, cost effective way to have this classic and fine book for the serious cook and/or cookbook collector. Library of Congress Number: 61-12331. Interestingly enough, this is the same number assigned to the First Volume that Julia Child authored.
Very Good + No Jacket. First edition stated, with author's note dated August 1961, hardcover, very light bumps to spine ends, slight lean, touch of soiling to covers, stray pencil mark to for-edge, otherwise bright and clean, a VG+ copy without dustjacket.
Good. 1961 First edition first printing (no statement of printing, August 1961 to rear note) missing the jacket, ink to flyleaf, faint moisture stain bottom edge and sunfaded spine. Tight binding text unmarked. Please email for photos.
Near fine. Black & white drawings by Sidonie Coryn. 684p. + index. Large 8vo, off-white cloth with fleur de lys pattern; tiny bit of rubbing at the head of the spine & the corner tips. New York: Knopf, 1961. First Edition. Scarce first printing of Julia Child' first book. Laid in is the front cover of the dust jacket including flap, in very good condition, with the color illustration of gigot roti.
Illustr by Sidonie Coryn, 10 x 7, patterned cloth, 684 pp + xxxii pp index, covers a bit worn, extremities lightly fraying, spine ends bumped, spine a little toned, hinges loose, contents a little used, a few pp dogeared but clean, with rear flap of dust jacket laid in loose at end. Julia Child Rocks!
I had to get this early edition book after reading Julia Child's "My Life in France" in which she explains how this "cookery book" came to being. This tome uses precise language yet it retains all of Julia's wit and charm. As a reference, it is very user friendly and unintimidating because Julia is there guiding every step. It is not just a cook book but a piece of culinary history.
