This is the story of Marlene Dietrich written by her daughter. From earliest childhood, Maria Riva was almost constantly her mother's companion, helper, confidante. This book describes her travels and Dietrich's passionate meetings or exchanges of letters with John Gilbert, Brian Aherne, Erich Maria Remarque, Mercedes De Acosta, Jean Gabin, Edith Piaf, Gary Cooper and John Wayne; from Dietrich's total command of detail - no matter how great and powerful her director - of her own film performances, to fascinating first-time, close-up glimpses of international film, stage and literary circles from the 1920s to the 1960s.

The review of July 4, 2013, by Fredrick, is exactly right.
Also, Maria Riva's writing style, wisdom and memory provide a jaw-dropping, detailed, page turner of a book about her famous legendary mother, Marlene Dietrich. The "legend" was totally self-obsessed and always seeking "true love." She wrote love letters about her swains, and sent carbon copies to her husband, Rudi, Maria's father. Rudi's mistress, Tami, is subject to the worst treatment -- even Rudi's dog is better treated. Out of this, Maria somehow develops into a truly human being!
You just have to read this to get the sweeping depth of stardom, betrayal, egotism.

SOME WOULD CALL IT ABUSE
Maria Riva--who is, let me tell you right up front. an astonishingly intelligent woman--tells with aching sadness the lifelong saga of her relationship with her Mother Marlene Dietrich...and you just want to WEEP! Dietrich's imperious self-absorption, her random cruelties to more folk than just her daughter...pass, with this book, into legend and stand as a cautionary tale for the ages.
Even all these years after its publication, this book remains a must read. Its deep humanity will be a boon for everyone who has undergone an ordeal similar to Riva's, It will serve as a compelling addition to the healing process. To the others who will read this book with their mouths agape it will be a kind of instruction book in what NOT to do in order to be an integral part of the human parade with kindness and dignity. Twenty years after its [publication, this book is as current and compelling TODAY as it was the day it first hit the bookstores. Buy it! Read it!...and grow.

Unless you are completely interested in this narcissistic being, I would not recommend this book.
