Estroff , a medical anthropologist, becomes immersed in the daily lives of a group of people with psychiatric disabilities, In one astouinding chapter she describes how she takes the psychotropic drugs that were used in the l970s and documents the side effects she endured. This scholarly work reveals what it is like to be a mental patient.
This was a very academic book so it is not a quick read, but it was a very interesting look at psychiatric patients in the late 70's. I had to do a report on it for my Cultural Anthropology class and I don't regret it a bit.
