The story takes place in New England, Haiti and other parts of the land. It takes place in the late 18th, early 19th century and is a wonderful chronicle of the politics of the time, especially the intrigues and animosities between Federalists and Jeffersonians. It gives a bit different and rather critical view of John Adams and others of the times. The protagonist is a lawyer in search of spoils in Haiti and of a young woman who's picture he carries with him. It is a fascinating historical novel about life in early New England and other colonies wrenched from England and France.

Now. the d.j. is chipped and I will put it in a brodart cover to protect if further, but the color is a strange, almost greenish tint to it. the spine area is tanned by sunning. but the front illus. picture is still nice. Please note; When first writing this book Roberts found it necessary to obtain a book entitled MOREAU DE ST. MERY'S AMERICAN JOURNEY 1793-1798. It was in French and so he and his wife Anna translated it. I find this a facsinating story. We also have that title listed by Roberts in hardcover. So a little history from the history maker himself. Sized 6x9.5 x 1.5, solid copy but d.j. does show those chips and that is the only real flaw noticed in this listing.

Roberts presents history in a way few have ever even approached---as high drama, detailed and authentic, with dashing heroes, a delectable heroine, an unforgettable supporting cast and as great a world wide reach as Ludlum or LeCarre. This is truly a thriller.
Kenneth Roberts was a highly talented writer who started life as a Professor of History. He spent years researching his novels, going to original sources, far from the dry leaves of the librarian researcher.
