I have been reading historical romance for many years now and have found several favorite authors whose ability to tell a story and writing style are brilliant. Mary Balogh, Laura Kinsale, Jane Feather, for example. Robin Schone's, The Lover is my first foray into erotic historical romance. Her authorship is on par with my favorites above and the erotica is delicious!

This is not your average romance novel (which I shun like the plague!), but a story that starts out with the two people locked together in a financial arrangement. Michael's services were purchased by the spinster since he is a 'professional' and she is lonely and this is her last chance to experience a man. There is a very slow building of feelings which is accentuated by Ms. Schone's minimal use of dialogue to convey a point with the result that the reader is inexoracbly drawn into the mutual feelings of both people. Michael is a man of few words - but they speak volumes. Less is definitely more! I found this to be a powerful tool. There is also a very strong secondary story filled out with the use of flashbacks. Michael and Gabriel were both found on the streets of France and rescued by a 'madam'. She trained Michae, the dark haired one, to please women and Gabriel, the fair-haired one, to please men. They were her two angels. Michael has a dark past and Gabriel has no past except squalor. Both men share an deep and unspoken love that is intricately woven into the main story. I couldn't put this book down! It was sensual, erotic and filled with a tension that was palpable. Read Gabriel's Woman after this book. It also is a blockbuster and should be a movie.
