Johannes Verne is seven years old and an orphan. His father has just been killed by Don Isador, and now Johannes is taken 40 miles into the Mojave desert and left to die. All this killing is being done by the boys grandfather because Johannes father was not of noble birth, and both the father and the grandson are considered as peons by the grandfather--a cruel, haughty, out of touch with the real world, bitter old man. The boy is taken in by indians, a giant, a beautiful young Russian woman, his maternal aunt, and a seagoing captain that all knew and admired his father, Zachary Verne. The setting is California, the Palm Springs desert. The story is about the boy growing to a man, and how he is helped by all his friends, and how his enemies keep trying to kill him. A great story.
