Charles De Lint does this so well - the blending of music, magic and modern-day. This tale has a lovely twist to it with the characters (but that is for the reader to discover, not the reviewer to reveal!).
It is set in Cornwall, England, and it is obvious that he has done his homework on the area very well - although, charmingly, he seems to have forgotten that English cars have the driver's seat on the right - but I can forgive him completely for that :-)
For those who have read De Lint before, it is well up to standard, and for first-timers, this is a great book to discover him by.
