Publishers Weekly, 1994-02-28 Perhaps only after some deliberation may readers determine the most dazzling side of Howard's ( No Traveller ) newest book, choosing from between the sheer diversity of poetic forms marshalled by the writer and the sustained delight provided by his witty, poised, poetic voice. Epistolary poems frame the volume, initially a letter to Matisse deftly daubing politics and art, and finally a presumed letter to the New York Times , sympathetically portraying the ``Man Who Beat Up Homosexuals Reported to Have AIDS Virus.'' In Robert Browning fashion, an exceptional set of dramatic characters also holds court in the poems, ranging from the persona of Isadora Duncan artfully resisting the advances of D'Annunzio to the boasting taxidermist whose masterpiece is a certain stuffed human (``a perfect specimen in all respects ''), to Telemachus moodily meeting lavender-robed, clairvoyant Helen. In an airy and often amusing tenor, the poet discourses on ``the spirit-writing known as graffito,'' puzzles about Mozart's K452 quintet, fantasizes Disraeli's tableau of a young Duke dressing, and fancies the story behind the Latin lexicon given by Wallace Stevens to Robert Frost. Yet elegies to the poet's friends disclose a poetic voice that is more restrained, philosophical, ironic: ``Now / that I live, like most of us, in a world / which has ceased to exist, it will have to be / your silence I harp on, look to, learn from.'' This volume will be a treat for new and familiar readers of Howard: the poetry is gracefully crafted, eminently readable, urbanely entertaining--a superb poetic companion. (Mar.)
