This book was born in response to personal requests asked many times by a variety of people--many of whom are far removed from any traditional religious base--for Nouwen to describe the way to live a spiritual life in a material world. Nouwen's answer is both a challenge and a promise that life works, has deep meaning, and is worth all the pain and struggle.Hide synopsis
I have read and enjoyed Henri J. M. Nouwen's writing over the years, and I was not disappointed by his "Life of the Beloved," a clear, concise and sequential exposition of what spirituality meant to him. In his earlier works, I experienced a somberness in the author. Such is not present in this or in his last book, "Adam," the latter recounting his experience with a severely handicapped young man who profoundly influenced Nouwen. Two good reads!
