The Lessons of History

by ,

A concise survey of the culture and civilization of mankind, "The Lessons of History "is the result of a lifetime of research from Pulitzer Prize winning historians Will and Ariel Durant. With their accessible compendium of philosophy and social progress, the Durants take us on a journey through history, exploring the possibilities and limitations of humanity over time. Juxtaposing the great lives, ideas, and accomplishments with cycles of war and conquest, the Durants reveal the towering themes of history and give meaning to our own. Hide synopsis

Patterns of History Help Understand Today

by Hardy S on Jan 24, 2013

A great little book outlining historical trends relative to morals, economics, socialism, wars, economics, etc. Although this book was published in 1968, the reader can see many of the trends today: where we have been and where we are going. The background and insight of the Pulitzer Prize winning authors shows through.

Durants' summary

by Kenneth G on Nov 9, 2012

Written in lieu of sending out a corrections list of their Story of Civilization series, the Durants are always good reading, and this is a quick one. The gentlest of philosophers and the best writer of history in, uh history, Will Durant structures, his wife Ariel debates, and the two of them create a nice epilogue to over fifty years of writing together.
