In a preface entitled "A Word of Explaination", Edith Eurdora Kohl writes, "I have not attempted in this book to write an autobiography. This is not my story---it is the story of the people, the present-day pioneers..." What the author meant to convey is elusive and, quite naturally, has given rise to much speculation as to whether the work is autobiographical or historical fiction, or, somewhere inbetween. Nevertheless, most agree that the account is well written and stirring.
