Conflict abounds and Peters delights

A suffragette protest-turned-burglary is Amelia Peabody's first clue that the 1907 archaeological season probably won't be any quieter than the last. Trouble follows the Emersons from England to Egypt, where the family must not only confront dangerous enemies from the past, but are also forced to contend with a startling problem even closer to home. The most lasting impression, however, will be made in the near-final pages of the story, when the Emersons suffer a loss that will change their family forever. The Ape Who Guards the Balance marks a first in this stellar series, as readers see Amelia confronting not only a vicious adversary and an old nemesis, but also certain prejudices she had not known she harboured. It makes a refreshing change to see the racial conflicts that are always so gracefully handled come from a new quarter this time, and the internal conflict that Ramses must confront adds a surprising degree of impetus to an already well-paced plot. Another jewel in a line of literary gems, The Ape Who Guards the Balance does not disappoint.
