Like me, you probably own too many books on knitting already, and you're wondering why you need another one, especially at this price. There are many equally good and cheaper books on lace knitting, right?
Wrong. It's difficult to find a copy of Susanna E. Lewis' Knitting Lace: A Workshop with Patterns and Projects for under $100, because she has written THE book.
Lewis begins with a 19th century lace sampler from the collection of The Brooklyn Museum, and gives instructions for all 92 patterns--in both chart and written form--including the hem! Her photographs of the sampler, front and back, are excellent, but this is only the beginning.
The next chapters deconstruct several representative patterns, explaining in detail how decreases and yarnovers work , and how in certain arrangements, and how they influence the behavior of surrounding stitches. It's a matter of bias and balance, and she demonstrates with lots of illustrated examples.
Speaking as one who has frogged a lot of lace knitting experiments in despair, unable to figure out what I did wrong--this is gold.
There's more. After teaching us how to understand traditional lace patterns, Lewis teaches us how to design our own. She also explains how to chart patterns from photographs, and how to chart those unbelievably complicated written instructions from the last two centuries.
This is a serious and substantial course on knitting lace. Lewis is an excellent teacher, and the skills taught in each chapter prepare you for the lessons of the next. This is probably the last book on the subject I'll ever need. I recommend it very highly.
