Kiefers zentrales Thema ist die Erinnerung und ihre Ablagerungen im kollektiven Gedächtnis. In seinen frühen Werken setzte er sich vor allem mit der Frage auseinander, wie man überhaupt noch ein"deutscher Künstler"sein könnte nach dem Holocaust und der Vereinnahmung der nationalen kulturellen und künstlerischen Tradition durch die NS-Ideologie. Kiefer "trauerte" um diese verstellte Tradition-in großformatigen Gemälden mit Titeln wie Deutsche Geisteshelden oder Hermannsschlacht.
