Fair. iv, 479 pp, in original blue cloth, which is heavily worn, with several chips and tears. Corners rubbed through to boards. Old signatures on front pastedown, old dampstain near gutter of first 10 pages, occasional staining/smudges in the margins, not affecting text. Binding sound. Includes much interesting detail about native life and customs in Sierra Leone and Liberia as well as particulars of the trade in gold and other commodities.

Original red cloth binding is heavily rubbed at the extremities, with moderate soiling; spine is heavily darkened, and is nearly detached with several large chips missing; protected and functional in custom stiff archival mylar. Pages 195-214 are starting to loosen. The last 20+ leaves are slightly stained in the margin, not affecting the text. Previous owner's name neatly in pencil on front endpaper.
