This is a remarkable book, quite the best I read all year. I can't understand how Fanny Kemble could have thought she would be able to endure her husband's slave plantation. In the end she couldn't put up with it, and this book reveals why not - the savagery, torture and degradation faced by slaves on what may well have been one of the "better" plantations, and the realisation that she was complicit in all of that. If you are ever inclined to look for good in the antibellum South - read this.
