Kasson, a native of Charlotte, Virgina, came to Iowa in 1857 an accomplished lawyer. In 1860, he was a delegate to the Chicago Convention that elected Abraham Lincoln as the brand new Republican Party's candidate for President. Under Lincoln, Kasson served as First Assistant Postmaster General and played a prominent role in US diplomacy. He died in 1910.
