Amity is a quiet town near New York, until the day a woman goes swimming and doesn't return. The next morning, the police find her body washed up on the beach and it appears that she was the victim of a shark attack, but will anyone believe Officer Brody? "Penguin Readers" is a series of simplified novels, film novelizations and original titles that introduce students at all levels to the pleasures of reading in English. Originally designed for teaching English as a foreign language, the series' combination of high interest level and low reading age makes it suitable for both English-speaking teenagers with limited reading skills and students of English as a second language. Many titles in the series also provide access to the pre-20th century literature strands of the National Curriculum English Orders. "Penguin Readers" are graded at seven levels of difficulty, from "Easystarts" with a 200-word vocabulary, to Level 6 (Advanced) with a 3000-word vocabulary. In addition, titles fall into one of three sub-categories: "Contemporary", "Classics" or "Originals". At the end of each book there is a section of enjoyable exercises focusing on vocabulary building, comprehension, discussion and writing. Some titles in the series are available with an accompanying audio cassette, or in a book and cassette pack. Additionally, selected titles have free accompanying "Penguin Readers Factsheets" which provide stimulating exercise material for students, as well as suggestions for teachers on how to exploit the Readers in class.

Moves fast and is an enjoyable read. Differs from the movie and in this case it is for the better. Very few times the movie out ranks the book, but in this case, movie wins.

Jaws ~ It's a Summertime must!
Ever since the movie, Jaws, came to the theater, the story has been a favorite of mine. Not a summer has gone by that I have not re-read the book and watched the movie.
When I learned the book was available on CD in an unabridged format, I immediately ordered it. The book, of course, has a sub-plot and a lot more detail. I enjoyed listening to it while working in my studio...and will surely listen to it again. It is one of those summer stories that never gets old!

Jaws sinks it's teeth in and doesn't let go
Jaws catches readers in th first pages, with a brutal shark-attack coming right away. The rest of the book (more so than the movie) deals with the townspeople, and how they each react to the shark. The finale is heart-pounding, and surprising even if you've seen the movie.
Publishers Weekly, 2009-04-27 Benchley's novel, while better known as the source material for Steven Spielberg's classic movie, has earned its own stripes as a small gem of suspense fiction. With another summer fast approaching, audio listeners may be interested in revisiting the town of Amity, Long Island, and getting back in the water. Erik Steele, a theater and film actor, chomps into Benchley's raw prose with appetite, enjoying every bite of gore and social observation. Making ample use of well-placed pauses and silences, Steele amplifies not only the suspense, but Benchley's surprisingly well-honed characterizations. The experience, of course, is markedly different from Spielberg's film, offering shocks less visceral and more contemplative. A Random House hardcover. (Apr.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC.
