This book is largely a rewrite of a previous book written by this author, entitled "Ayorama". The authors added some material and photos and touched up some of the writing. Like the first book, The "Incredible Eskimo" is a good read that shows extremely honest observations both of the Barren Land Eskimos and of himself. I thoroughly enjoyed his comments on his own honest reactions to the sexual tempations offered by the social customs of the Barren Land Inuit. He limits his social criticisms to his own behavior and and the rules of the Church. His acceptance and even admiration of the life style and difficulties of the Barren Land Inuit life style is amazing when one realizes that he was born and raised in Corsica in a world that had a totally different set of life rules and life style. Having read both his books, I feel that his observations of the Central Inuit social customs and lifestyles are extremely reliable. Frankly, religious missionaries often interprete their social observations through a filter of their own religious beliefs. Raymond de Coccola is a natural anthropologist and his work should be a part of the library of anyone interested in Inuit cultures. My judgement is supported by having lived in close association with the Central Yupik people (The Inuit of Western Alaska) for 40 years and having a degree in Anthropology. Thank you.
