Matter uses sections with headlines to contain the many concurrent fields of action each day, making it easy to flip back and forth. There is an excellent balance of command-level and regiment-level narrative. The writing is rich with detail, if a little dry. The author very consistently indicates historical uncertainty by use of "probably" and "perhaps" words, with no clumsy language. The footnotes are in the back of the book, and they are thin on references to personal memoirs and controversies. By far the best maps of all books on the subject.
A wonderful supplement to Gordon Rhea's more recent books.
