There is light smudging to some pages throughout the text, a light pencil notation to the title page, a few pencil notations to isolated pages of text, and moderate damp staining to several pages at the rear of the text. Most pages, however, are clean and crisp, with mild, even toning. Illustrations are present throughout, some have been hand-colored. The book has been rebound in brown cloth, so the textblock is tight as are the hinges. Boards are scuffed with mild damp stains and heavy wear at extremities. Worn through at corners. Some cracking to leather along joints. Approx one inch of leather is missing at head of front joint, leaving paper exposed, but it has been sealed for protection. Spine banded in gilt with black leather title block. Mild creasing to spine leather. Previous ownership information written at top of front end paper. End papers are tanned at edges with scattered foxing. Pages are generally clean but toned, with occasional creases, smudges, spots or light foxing. A few pages show more wear with chipping and edge tears at extremities. Repaired binding is firm and tight. 754 pages. Profusely illustrated. A handsome copy of this important and influential volume.
